Financial Aid & Scholarships

Here we discuss the topic of financial aid as it relates to study abroad. It is best to speak with the Financial Aid Office to discuss your personal financial aid eligibility as it relates to the specific program you have chosen. Visit the Study Abroad Scholarships website to learn more about the types of study abroad scholarships for which you may be eligible.

REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be degree-seeking at KU and meet all Financial Aid Progress requirements.
  • Your FAFSA form should be filled out listing KU as the first-choice school.
  • You are required to be approved by KU to study abroad.
  • Complete Study Abroad Course Pre-Approval Form (non-KU courses) and submit to International Admissions and Services.
  • Give an approved copy of the Study Abroad Course Pre-Approval Form to the Financial Aid Office (except for KU courses).

Semester

  • Provide your study abroad course schedule to the Financial Aid Office.
  • Financial Aid Office at KU will process your financial aid.
  • Financial aid is disbursed to KU — not to any other school — after the semester has started.
  • For exchange programs:
    • Most scholarships and waivers of tuition can be used for KU exchange programs.
    • Financial aid will first be used to pay KU tuition and fees and the remaining balance will be refunded to you, based on your refund preferences
    • You are completely responsible for travel, room, meals, and personal expenses.
  • For non-exchange programs:
    • Most scholarships and waivers of tuition cannot be used for these programs.
    • Financial aid amounts may be adjusted due to cost differences between KU’s tuition and other school’s program costs.
    • KU will process consortium agreement or contract and send to other school (please note that not all schools participate in consortium agreements).
    • Financial aid that is disbursed will be refunded to you, based on your refund preferences.
    • You are completely responsible for paying tuition, fees, travel, room, meals, and personal expenses.
Summer

  • You must fill out the Summer Financial Aid Form from the Financial Aid Office.
  • Provide your course schedule to the Financial Aid Office.
  • Summer aid will be disbursed after KU’s summer session starts.
  • Your financial aid that is disbursed will be refunded to you, based on your refund preferences.
  • You are completely responsible for paying tuition, fees, travel, room, meals, and personal expenses.
Note:

  • You must be enrolled at least 6 credits (both sessions combined) in order to qualify for Stafford and PLUS loans, PHEAA State Grant, Pell Grant, and certain private loans.
  • Stafford loans are subject to annual loan limits. Most students exhaust their loan amounts in the fall and spring semesters.
  • In some cases, it is advised that you request additional loans for the fall and/or spring semester. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Winter

  • Aid for winter term is processed during the fall semester.
  • You may use any remaining Stafford loans that weren’t used for the fall and spring semester.
  • You may take out a private alternative loan or have your parent apply for a Parent PLUS loan for the fall semester.
  • Your financial aid that is disbursed will be refunded to you, based on your refund preferences.
  • You are completely responsible for paying tuition, fees, travel, room, meals, and personal expenses.
